Sarah Leather - Counsellor in Training (Children & young people under 18)
Hello! I’m Sarah and I’m a trainee counsellor currently doing a placement at BodhiSpace. I work with clients under the age of 18 and I’m doing this placement as part of my University of Northampton Master’s degree in Counselling Children and Young People.

When you’re looking for a counsellor it is important that you know something about them – this will help you choose a counsellor who is right for you and who you’ll feel comfortable with.

My background is working in early years and education before getting my first degree in Psychology and Counselling. I then went on to work with different local authorities, supporting many children and families who needed some extra support when things were difficult in their lives. From the things I learnt when I began to study Counselling - and in my work with many different children and families - I found that I really enjoyed working therapeutically. This is what led me to my Master’s degree, to BodhiSpace, and to you reading this today!

I work in what is called an ‘integrative’ way. This means that I am trained in many different approaches and modalities such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Systemic, Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Narrative. I chose to train in this way as it is really important to me to work collaboratively with my clients. This means that we think together about what you would like to get from counselling and I have a big ‘tool-kit’ to draw upon to help you get there. Different approaches work for different people, and part of working collaboratively means that we would figure out what is most helpful for you and change things when we need to. Some other things that I think are really important - and that influence how I work with clients - are trust, understanding, choice, safety, transparency and acceptance.

If you think that we might be a good fit to work together, I look forward to meeting you soon.
